VELCOME TO FILEFJELLSTUENE
From mountain dairy farming to tourism.
This place, 900 metres above sea level, by the old
King’s road connecting Western and Eastern Norway, is
where Marie and Nils Hermundstad started their mountain
dairy farm right after the war. They kept farm animals
until 1959. Marie ran the farm and looked after the
stock, while Nils was a driver and owned his own taxi
business.
The goal of expanding the farm, which started in 1960,
was to open an overnight stop here in the mountains on
the border between Valdres and Sogn og Fjordane. Here
travellers were able to enjoy magnificent scenery with
hiking opportunities in Jotunheimen and day trips to
Sognefjorden. Close by you can also find Eidsbugarden,
St.Thomas Church, and Skogstad, where Eilif Petersen
produced many of his famous paintings, like "Kone ved
Rokken", Sommerkveld ved Skogstad", and "Kuer på gammel
vei".The first guests, when Marie and Nils opened the
new building in 1962, were Danish and German youths, but
Norwegians also counted as frequent guests. Nils started
his ‘transport service’ early on, and took guests to and
from, even as far as Oslo.
In 1985 Marie turned her thriving business over to her
grandchild Nils Torstein and his wife Ingvild.
